The 'Cirque du Fer à Cheval'

The twin of the 'Gavarnie' in the Pyrenees, it is the most visited and best known place of interest (conservation area) in Sixt Fer à Cheval.

Cirque du Fer à Cheval

To be found at the far east end of the valley it is an immense amphitheatre of steep limestone cliffs stretching for 4 to 5 km and reaching heights of 500 to 700 metres. It is the largest alpine mountain cirque, dominated by the 'Corne du Chamois' and set against the serrated edges of the Tenneverge (2985m). During the month of June more than thirty waterfalls can be seen gushing down the rock faces...

You can explore the Cirque du Fer à Cheval by following the nature trail which was created by the Association des Amis de la Réserve Naturelle or alternatively you can adventure out as far as the 'Bout du Monde (end of the coomb), which is dominated by the Ruan and Prazon glaciers. This walk which can be enjoyed by all the family will take about three and a half-hours (there and back), and will be an unforgettable experience. The fitter amongst us can discover the Pas du Boret footpath from which you will get an aerial view of the entire cirque. Not to be missed!
