Flora and fauna

The large altitude range (900-3100 metres), the contrasting geological landscapes and the biographical position of the massif have allowed for the development of a very rich and varied flora and fauna.

linéaire

Some 800 plant species have been noted with some quite remarkable examples such as the Sabot de Vénus (Lady’s Slipper), the Chardon Bleu (thistle), the Ancolie des Alpes (alpine columbine) or the Lys Martagon (Martagon Lily)

bouquetin

Many different species of animals can also be observed. Conditions here are favourable for their development and some examples of wildlife to be observed are, the Salamandre Noir (Black Salamander), the Triton Alpestre (Alpine Newt), the Cerf (stag), the Chamois, the Bouquetin (ibex), The Aigle Royal (Royal Eagle) or the Lagopède (ptarmigan -kind of grouse). You may even catch a glimpse of the Gypaète Barbu (bearded vulture). This bird of prey was recently returned to the Alpes, it was reintroduced just a few kilometres away from the nature reserve. (as the crow flies, naturally!).

lagopede

In the middle of this living environment is man, a relative latecomer (no permanent presence attested to before the religious conquest of the 12th century), but omnipresent through his dwellings, use of the mountain pastures and forests, his skills and language. This is a perfect example of the adaptation of living beings and of man in particular to the harsh conditions of the mountains.
