Farming

Without a doubt, the most remarkable characteristic of the alpine community developed with the occupation of the upper valleys (from the 11th century onwards). Indeed the first inhabitants of our valley were shepherds. They came with their herds and struggled with the rugged climate (long, hard winters with lots of snow and short summers). They decided to take their herds and follow the grass whereever it grew. This is how the famous mountain pastures came into being. The pastures are to be found at different altitudes and are used at different times during the summer. The population of the valley moved about at the same rhythm as their herds, leaving their houses in the village and climbing up to the alpine chalets from June through to the first snow falls. In the winter, the herds stayed in stables and fed on hay, which was harvested from the steepest grassy banks throughout the territory all through the summer.
